It is a sad day here if this is true, although I can't say that I am suprised.

2010 Pontiac G8 ST Likely DOA

PickupTrucks.com is reporting that Pontiac’s planned sport truck, the G8 ST, based on the G8 sedan, has been killed; it will not go on sale this year as originally planned, and it seems unlikely it will ever go on sale in the U.S.

An enthusiast and journalist favorite, it’s likely the ST would sell less than the sedan version, which isn’t exactly a top-seller. Last month, the G8 sedan sold 1,479 units. That’s more than the new Hyundai Genesis’ 1,040, but far less than the Dodge Charger’s 5,414 units, which was down 51% from the same month in 2007.

We’re still waiting on official confirmation from GM, but Mike Levine, editor of PickupTrucks.com, is reporting the news from reliable sources.

Detroit - After sifting through more than 18,000 possibilities, Pontiac has chosen to keep it simple, naming the recently revealed G8 sport truck the “ G8 ST.”

Thousands of fans submitted suggestions during a “Tame the Name” promotion, which delayed a final announcement until each possibility was considered and cleared for possible trademark use.

“Frankly, we were blown away by both the volume and quality of the names that were submitted,” said Craig Bierley, BPG product marketing director for cars and crossovers. “’ G8 ST’ was one of the most popular suggestions, plus we noticed a far broader trend toward simple, easy-to-remember names.”

“El Camino” was also a sentimental favorite, given the G8 ST’s resemblance to the classic Chevy.

“We actually thought very long about El Camino,” said Bierley. “In the end, we felt it was more appropriate to honor the El Camino’s unique place as part of Chevy’s heritage and not use that nameplate on a Pontiac.”

Perhaps the ultimate reflection of the blurring line between cars and trucks, the G8 ST will create a unique niche segment in the marketplace: a sports car with truck-like cargo and towing capabilities. Sharing the basic architecture and 361 hp V8 engine as the G8 GT performance sedan, it will offer a 73.9-inch cargo bed that has 42.7 cubic feet of cargo space and can carry a payload of 1,000 pounds (453 kg) or tow a 3,500-pound (1,587 kg) trailer.

Thanks to its six-speed automatic transmission and Active Fuel Management system, the G8 ST should offer some of the best fuel economy numbers for V8-powered vehicles with similar cargo/towing ratings while still turning in zero-to-60 times of 5.4 seconds.

The G8 ST will be available in late 2009 as a 2010 model and will be backed by GM’s industry best 100,000 mile, 5-year powertrain warranty. Pricing will be announced closer to availability.

Pontiac keeps the name of its El Camino redux painfully simple.

After allegedly considering some 18,000 possible names for its G8-based sport truck, Pontiac has decided to “keep it simple” by giving it the painfully dull and decidedly un-clever moniker “G8 ST.” Catchy, huh?

With that, Pontiac puts a lid on the can of worms it opened months ago with a lame naming contest called “Tame the Name.” Well, consider the name tamed.

According to Pontiac, a “sentimental favorite” was El Camino, a name that Pontiac wisely deemed more appropriately left in its place of high repute in Chevrolet’s history—and possible future.

“Frankly, we were blown away by both the volume and quality of the names that were submitted,” said Craig Bierley, Buick/Pontiac/GMC product marketing director for cars and crossovers. “G8 ST was one of the most popular suggestions, plus we noticed a far broader trend toward simple, easy-to-remember names.”

But, evidently, none were as alluring and provocative as G8 ST, which isn’t much of a stretch from Pontiac’s own name for the nearly identical concept truck Pontiac revealed last March at the New York auto show: G8 Sport Truck. Hey, at least they didn’t call it “Ute,” the wretchedly inelegant name with which the car is sold by GM’s Aussie brand, Holden.

The name “Brute” would be an interesting—and fitting—derivation, actually, as the G8 ST will be equipped nearly identically to the G8 GT, which we’ve praised endlessly on account of its 361-hp V-8 with fuel-saving cylinder deactivation ready to light up the fat rear tires at the first stab of the throttle. GM expects the fat-fendered hauler to hit 60 in 5.4 seconds when it’s not maxing out its half-ton cargo capacity or tugging a 3500-lb trailer. Can you say hooligan car?

Pontiac also believes it will be one of the most fuel-efficient V-8 powered vehicles that can tow and haul so much.

The G8 ST is expected to arrive in late 2009 as a 2010 model at a price we expect to be close to that of the G8 GT, which currently starts at $29,995.

I suggested Ute. There is another website out there that wants everyone to vote to name it the El Camino. I don't think that GM would do that with it now being a Pontiac, but then again, I didn't think that they would bring it over without it being a Chevrolet and calling it the elCamino.

I don't CARE what they call it. Its what I have wanted since I found out the GTO was coming back and that it was being built by Holden. When I looked at Holden, I saw the ute and wanted one. I will have one now.
